Embryo Queen muncul di tahun 1968 saat dua orang pelajar London's Imperial College Brian May dan Tim Staffell ingin ngeband.
Mereka lantas mengiklankan di papan pengumuman sekolah, bahwa sedang mencari drummer dengan style seperti Ginger Baker. Iklan ini menarik perhatian pemuda bernama Roger Meddows Taylor untuk ikut audisi dan berhasil lolos.
Group ini kemudian diberi nama SMILE.
Tahun 1970 SMILE ditinggal pergi Tim Staffel dan bergabung dengan group "Humpy Bong".
Frederick Bulsara teman kuliah Tim Staffel di Ealing College of Art lantas bergabung, inilah cerita tentang Queen bermula.
Frederick Bulsara mengganti namanya menjadi Freddie Mercury, dan nama band dirubah menjadi QUEEN.
Untuk pemain bass Queen menggunakan pemain bass cabutan sampai saat John Deacon pada bulan Pebruary tahun 1971 resmi menjadi anggota ke 4 Queen.
Band ini manggung tanpa lelah di pentas kecil untuk teman-teman dekat mereka, sampai mereka dapat kesempatan untuk mencoba studio rekaman baru yang bernama "De Lane Lea". Disini Queen merekam demo tapes dan menandatangani kontrak dengan Trident di tahun 1972, dan dibayar sebesar £60 per minggu.
Queen memulai bekerja mempersiapkan album pertama mereka yang direkam dibawah pengawasan Roy Thomas Baker dan John Anthony (staff enginer di Trident Studios)
Pada tahun 1973 Trident dan EMI menandatangani kontrak rekaman dengan Queen, dan pada bulan Juli 1973 mereka merilis album pertama dengan titel Queen dengan corak musik yang menggabungkan unsur hard rock dengan harmoni vokal ala opera.
Album dengan cover warna suram ini selama 17 minggu bertengger ditangga album mencapai no 24.
Peluncuran album ini diiringi tour Inggris, mereka menjadi band pembuka "Mott The Hoople", yang dimulai di Town Halls, kota Leeds pada 12 November 1973.
Banyak orang menilai aksi mereka lebih dari sekedar band pembuka, sehingga menghasilkan para pengikut awal Queen.
Penggarapan album ketiga berlangsung dari bulan Juli 1974 sampai dengan November 1974. Berbeda dengan sebelumnya, dimana dimulai tanpa keterlibatan Brian May, dan sedikitnya bantuan dari Roy Thomas Baker.
Setelah Brian May merasakan kondisi yang lebih baik, barulah dia datang ke studio untuk mengisi bagian gitar meskipun sebenarnya masih belum pulih seratus persen.
Pada 11 Oktober 1974 single "Killer Queen"/"Flick Of The Wrist'" dirilis dan menjadi hits dimana selama 11 minggu bertengger di tangga ke 2.
Lagu Killer Queen menurut Brian May merupakan suatu lagu yang terbaik yang menjadi titik balik kesuksesan dari Queen.
Lagu ini bercerita tentang gadis panggilan kelas atas yang dalam tafsiran Freddie Mercury bahwa orang kalangan kelas ataspun bisa menjadi PSK juga.
Akhirnya album ketiga ini dapat diselesaikan dan dirilis pada tanggal 1 bulan November 1974 di Empire, Liverpool dengan titel SHEER HEART ATTACK yang memuat 13 track.
Pada 9 Januari 1975 diluncurkan single yang diambil dari album Sheer Heart Attack, yaitu "Now I'm Here"/"Lily of the Valey" (buat gue lagu Now I'm Here paling berkesan adalah versi yang di dobel album Live Killers).
Tahun 1975 di bulan Pebruari 1975 dengan dukungan penuh dari label Elektra, Queen melakukan invasi ke Amerika sebagai headliner yang dimulai dari Agora, Columbus Ohio pada tanggal 5 Pebruari 1975.
Meskipun dihujani kritik yang membandingkan mereka dengan led Zeppelin, namun penjualan tiket mereka sangat mengesankan dan selalu sold out. Sehingga beberapa pertunjukan terpaksa dilakukan 2 kali pada venue yang sama (kayak jadwal bioskop aja :)).
Ditengah kesuksesan itu, lagi-lagi masalah medis mendera Queen. Kali ini Freddie Mercury diserang Radang Tenggorokan pada bulan April 1975, dan kondisinya cukup serius sehingga terpaksa membatalkan 7 jadwal dari rangkaian USA tour ini dan Queen memutuskan berlibur selama 10 hari di Hawaii, sebelum mereka meluncur ke Jepang (negeri yang membuat Queen tergila-gila).
Tour Jepang diawali pada 19 April di Budokan, Tokyo dan disambung dengan kota-kota Nagoya, Kobe, Fukuoka, Okayama, Shizuoka, Yokohama dan kembali lagi ke Tokyo di Budokan.
Ketika mereka pertama kali mendarat di bandara Jepang disambut oleh ribuan pengemar mereka. Pada saat yang sama Sheer Heart Attack memuncaki chart di Jepang.
